Will Bhutto be WWIII's Franz Ferdinand?

By: Stady Canton

It's entirely possible. If the assassination of Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto further destabilizes the country,  war won't be confined to its western border with Afghanistan.

Pakistan's nuclear weapons could be brought into play, lost in the nation's general chaos or unleashed by the nation's chaotic generals. Terrorists using nuclear weapons could strike virtually anywhere. If India is attacked, will they strike back with their own nuclear arsenal? What will other nations do? How does the US handle its multiple alliances? What will man of the year Putin direct Russia to do? Will China flex its mighty military muscles?

Growing up after "duck and cover" but before the end of the cold war, I feared the inevitably nuclear World War III.  Joining the Church changed that fear somewhat, but it didn't change my abhorrence of war. At least now I know where the dead go after the bombs fall.

Bruce R. McConkie's writings on the Second Coming suggest that atomic war could be responsible for the fire and vapors of smoke that would cause the signs in heaven. Nuclear winter could be a reason that no man would see rainbows, for the blood moon. Atomic bombs can certainly bring to pass the intense heat and melting of the earth where they land.

But just because this could be a fulfillment of prophecy doesn't mean it has to be. Relatively cool heads could prevail and peace (such as it is) remain. I pray it will be so.

This is eerily reminiscent of the events that led up to WWI, I feel as though I'm watching history repeat itself in front of my eyes.

Stady-

You've put your finger on something that I haven't been able to articulate. I hope not, but I think you're on to something. And, considering that WW2 would never have come to pass had it not been for the events of WW1, I certainly hope this is not the case.
